(Proverbs 14)
This is a great one for a Monday… a rainy Monday at that!
“Even in laughter the heart may ache, and the end of joy maybe grief” (14:13)
I’ve done it and you may have too….
Received a phone call that contained some painful information and had to put on a smile in the next few minutes because you were at a party, at church or with people that were unrelated to the issue and didn’t want anyone to know what you were struggling with inside. Your laughter felt hollow but you felt you had to do it to “get through the moment” and to protect your intimate feelings.
“Even in laughter the heart may ache,”
I’ve been in some tense situations of grief and pain and someone cracked a joke that released the tension in the room for a brief moment but then the reality of the situation took hold again.
“Even in laughter the heart may ache”
maybe you have been with someone that was laughing and having a good time then a few hours after you had been with them you find out they were really struggling with something and you didn’t pick up on it because they did a good job of covering it up with their laughter.
“Even in laughter the heart may ache”
This verse is a good reminder that when we are with people they might not being doing as good as they let on.
We need to remember that…
not all that laugh are truly joyful
and
there is a short distance from laughter to tears.
So as you interact with people today, especially those you love. Look below the surface of how they are presenting themselves and see if anything is going on that they would need a good friend to support them through.
