You can’t straighten what is already crooked. You can try and try and try and try and try and try but crooked things in life will not straighten out.
This is what Solomon is saying in Ecclesiastes 1:15 “what is crooked cannot be straightened and what is lacking cannot be counted.”.
There are many things we would like to straighten out but can’t.
Like…
Arguments at home, conflicts at church, wrongs in the work place, mistakes made by the government, our own moral failings, financial troubles, physical disabilities etc…
Somethings don’t straighten out.
You say…
“But we worked the argument out”… yes but the mere fact you had an argument means that part of your existence can never be straightened. An argument at any level is crooked and never straight.
“But the church endured through its conflict and now is growing and God is working through it in a mighty way”…. Yes, but the mere fact there was a conflict points to a place in the church’s history that is crooked. It will always be crooked.
Straightening out life’s crookedness is not like a bar that was bent and you bend it back in place making it straight again. You can’t go back and undo the argument, the conflict, wrongs in the work place, mistakes made by the government, moral failings, financial troubles, physical disabilities and bend them back as if they never happened.
Crooked things in life cannot be straightened.
Even Jesus did not come to straighten things out under the sun. Instead He came to start something new, a new creation that has its ties in the land over the sun. A new creation that happens in every heart that receives Jesus as a Savior. A new creation that is never bent, its never crooked, it is always straight.
And this old crooked existence under the sun?
It will pass away. It will be done away with.
You know.. that thing you argued over… it will be gone in the end. It doesn’t matter.
You know that church conflict, where your side seemed to be important enough to break up relationships… in the end its “not worth a hill of beans”, it will be gone.
Crooked but wiped out.
The wrongs in the work place, mistakes made by the government, moral failings, financial troubles, and physical disabilities all gone…
because these things that have happened,
When Jesus creates a new heaven and a new earth
will be wiped away…
and will be replaced with something new.
