Come as you are

For some reason today I’ve been listening to David Crowder’s “Neon Steeple” album on repeat. It could be that I used a song from this album yesterday in a sermon, it also could just be that today it is speaking to me in a very personal way. Currently the song that is playing is of course “Come as you are.” The lyrics go a like this…

Come out of sadness
From wherever you’ve been
Come broken hearted
Let rescue begin
Come find your mercy
Oh sinner come kneel
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal

Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal

So lay down your burdens
Lay down your shame
All who are broken
Lift up your face
Oh wanderer come home
You’re not too far
So lay down your hurt
Lay down your heart
Come as you are

There’s hope for the hopeless
And all those who’ve strayed
Come sit at the table
Come taste the grace
There’s rest for the weary
Rest that endures
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t cure

So lay down your burdens
Lay down your shame
All who are broken
Lift up your face
Oh wanderer come home
You’re not too far

Lay down your hurt lay down your heart
Come as you are
Come as you are
Fall in his arms

Come as you are

There’s joy for the morning
Oh sinner be still
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal

Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal

So lay down your burdens
Lay down your shame
All who are broken
Lift up your face
Oh wanderer come home
You’re not too far
So lay down your hurt
Lay down your heart
Come as you are

We enter a week where we remember Christ and His sacrifice for us on the cross. That cross is the place where we lay our burdens down. It is the place where we fall into His arms.

Whereas I am thrilled about that fact, I also know that once you are a Christian the sorrows do not magically stop. Sometimes those sorrows blindside you, and catch you off guard. Sometimes those sorrows cut deep and there is an array of reasons as to why. Furthermore not all sorrows carry shame as a companion. Some sorrows just come unexpected not because of anything you have done wrong.

The thing that keeps me going when this happens in my life, isn’t the response of other people but the fact that “Earth has no sorrow that Heaven can’t heal.” And sometimes that is all you have to hold onto…

and that is more than enough.

Just keep in mind that some healing comes quickly and some healing occurs slowly…

but it comes none the less.
