Currently I am reading a book called “Ten Stupid Things that Keep Churches from Growing” by Geoff Surratt. Here are some personal thoughts on the eighth and ninth chapters.
Honestly, I really don’t have much to say about these two chapters. It is “stupid” to favor discipline over reconciliation (Chapter 8 ), and it is “stupid” to mix Ministry and Business (chapter 9 ).
Matthew 18 (Chapter 8 ) has been misused many times and used as more of a club than an act of grace, mercy and help. That said, from experience, if a person is not going to change, even if you have handled the situation with grace, mercy and have tried to help, they often will still paint you as a non-caring person. This is sometimes hard to digest. I view every member of FBC as a family member and treat each one as such. When you try to help a family member that rejects that help… it hurts. After all, even when there is rejection, they are still family.
Its hard not to care…
We have to protect the other family members and help those who have strayed to come back to Jesus. That is a delicate task. One that has to be handled with grace, mercy, and love.
As for Mixing ministry and business… I’m not even tempted to sale soap to all the members of the church. And if I ever do decide to sale stuff to the members… I hope someone smacks me… a smack with “you’re an idiot” would be very appropriate to bring me back to normalcy… and Jesus
