Currently I am reading a book called “Ten Stupid Things that Keep Churches from Growing” by Geoff Surratt. Here are some personal thoughts on the seventh chapter.
It just doesn’t work. You can’t be someone else. You have to be you.
I have had to learn this the hard way. I have to do ministry the way God wired me to do it. Its not that there is no research, or trying to learn from others… its just at the end of the day I have to take all that stuff and see what fits who God has designed me to be and…
who we are as a church.
It is important for Farmington Baptist to be who she is as a church.
This is not hard…
To find out who she is…. she should not…
go out and find a church she wants to be like and then change things to be like them.
look to see how it has always been done and then continue to do things that way. (You would then be like the people who are no longer alive that set up those ways. Those ways fit them not you.)
Label yourself contemporary, traditional, southern gosepel, etc…. for then you are not being who you are, who God has designed you to be. Instead you are making yourself fit into a box you really don’t fit in.
To try to be someone we are not as a church is a “stupid” thing to do.
For us to be who we are, is simple.
We just have to be who we are. No show, no trying to fit into something we are not. Just a group of people saved by grace following Christ with the gifts and the abilities He has given us to use and to be.
We have to surrender what we would like to mold ourselves into… and let Christ do the molding.
Its that simple.
So far we have been willing to do this. My prayer is that spirit will not be hindered… in any way.
