Well, here we are—it’s that time of year again.
The moment we start up October Music: September 30th, otherwise known as October Eve.
This year I’m reworking the playlist a little, including the second playlist that is made up mostly of Christian songs. That said – just like every year there are some new songs that are being added and here is that list…
First: The Original Ghostbusters Score
I finally bought the original score from the first Ghostbusters movie. Not just the theme song—the actual film score.
Ghostbusters has been one of my favorite movies for as long as I can remember, so it’s pretty cool to finally have the original score as part of this playlist after all these years. I can’t believe it took me this long to acquire it.
Second: “2 Step the Enemy”
This is the month when we celebrate Jesus and His victory over the powers of darkness, which makes “2 Step the Enemy” by Forrest Frank and Lost & Found a fun addition to the playlist. It doesn’t really have a spooky vibe, but its bluegrass sound does feel a little fallish. And with a message about not being intimidated by the devil, it fits right in with October music.
Third: “Ghost in the Graveyard” — Caleb & John
Graveyards are supposed to be about death.
About endings.
About what used to be.
But “Ghost in the Graveyard” turns the whole image upside down.
There’s a man buried six feet under guilt and shame. A heart that has turned to stone. A devil who has whispered lies and made promises he could never keep.
And then Jesus shows up.
Light enters the darkness. The devil runs. The stone rolls away. And the breath of God brings what was dead back to life.
Sound familiar?
That’s the gospel.
Jesus has always had a habit of showing up around dead things and refusing to leave them that way.
And that’s what makes this such a great October song. It uses all the imagery we associate with this time of year—darkness, ghosts, graveyards, even the devil—but tells a completely different story.
The darkness doesn’t win.
The grave doesn’t win.
The devil doesn’t win.
Jesus does.
And when the Holy Ghost shows up in the graveyard, dead things come alive.
Fourth: “Ghost Stories” — Brandon Lake
We usually think of ghost stories as tales meant to scare us.
But Brandon Lake tells a different kind of ghost story.
These are Holy Ghost stories.
Seas divide. Lions are silenced. Dead men come back to life. Fire falls. Ordinary people encounter the presence of God and are never the same.
And the best part? These aren’t just stories about what the Spirit did a long time ago. The song becomes a prayer for what He can still do today.
Spirit, move again.
Now that’s my kind of ghost story.
Fifth: “IDK” — Allison Eide
What’s your five-year plan?
I don’t know.
Is everything going to work out?
I don’t know.
What if something goes wrong?
I don’t know.
We spend a lot of our lives trying to have answers to questions we were never meant to answer. And that’s what I love about “IDK.” Faith isn’t suddenly knowing what happens next. It’s knowing Who is walking beside you when you don’t.
And then comes the line that puts this one on the October playlist: “Even demons know their fate.”
They already know how this story ends.
So what are you scared of?
I don’t know.
Finally: “The Lake of Fire” — We The Kingdom
The devil has an ending.
Think about that.
For all the fear.
All the lies.
All the darkness.
All the destruction.
He doesn’t get the last word.
“Lake of Fire” begins with the fall of an angel consumed by his own beauty and pride, and then takes us all the way to the end of the story—a white horse, a Rider, and a name written on His robe:
King of kings and Lord of lords.
That’s what makes this more than just a song about the devil’s judgment.
It’s a song about who wins.
Darkness has an expiration date.
Jesus doesn’t.
So that’s all the new songs for this year. Each one feels right for October in its own way.
After all, October has always been my favorite time of year to enjoy the spooky stuff—the ghosts, graveyards, monsters, old movies, strange sounds, and things that go bump in the night.
But there’s something else I love about it too.
We can have fun with the darkness because we already know how the story ends.
Darkness doesn’t get the last word.
The grave doesn’t get the last word.
The devil doesn’t get the last word.
Jesus does.
So bring on the pumpkins. Bring on the ghosts. Bring on the creepy movie scores. Turn the music up and let October begin.
