She doesn’t even know.
She’s so happy.

She has eaten WELL this year.

Sun’s coming up.
(Grissum)

Lights.
(Daresum)

And now for the—
(Grissum)

Action.
(Daresum)

Screen door opens.
Screen door shuts.

Hey look—over there. A doe.
(Daresum)

Yeah. A John Doe.
Wonder where he is.
(Grissum)

Here comes the farmer.
(Daresum)

He’s got the ax…
oh this is GREAT.
(Daresum)

That’s… kind of morbid.
(Grissum)

Look at her.
Just waddling right up to him.
Same routine. Every day.
(Daresum)

She is HUGE.
(Grissum)

Sixteen-pounder?
(Daresum)

No.
Thirty-six.
Minimum.
Biggest turkey yet.
(Grissum)

Plenty of scraps for us.
(Daresum)

Plenty.
(Grissum)

Food’s on the stump.
(Daresum)

She’s movin’ to gobble—
(Grissum)

WHAM!

Look at that head roll.
(Daresum)

Dumb bird.
(Grissum)

He just picks up the body like it’s nothing.
(Daresum)

Strong.
(Grissum)

Well, tomorrow we’ll hav—
(Daresum)

BOOM!
(Shotgun)

Both possums jump.
Daresum slips.
Claws skate across the slick roof—
no traction,
no chance.

He’s gone.

He falls straight down
onto the back of the buck below.

Direct hit.
Daresum lands on the antlers—
and grabs the rack like it owes him money.

John panics.
John’s doe panics.
Daresum REALLY panics.

The buck bolts.

Another BOOM.
Hunters shouting behind them.

Grissum watches, horrified,
as Daresum’s backside
bobs
up
and
down
on John’s back
like a broken rhythm section.

John’s doe disappears.
John disappears.
Daresum disappears.

Into the woods.

Human voices…

Dadburn it—missed ’em.

Hey—let’s shoot that possum on top of the barn!

Grissum
does not wait.

He is
already gone.
Straight under the nearest shed.
Possum teleportation.

All is quiet…

…except for the soft rhythmic sound…

of a fowl
being
skinned.
